"In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
They called it the greatest discovery in human history.
The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT."
The Citadel, what some have called the center of the galaxy's greatest achievements, was devastatingly embroiled in war with the Geth; led by their own agent, the rogue Spectre Saren. Their only saving grace, the first human Spectre John Shepard alongside his crew uniquely composed of courageous individuals from many races, heroically came to their rescue and defeated Saren. The battle was not without it's losses; however, Shepard was forced to choose which ship to defend, going to the aid of the Council's Destiny Ascension. This choice came at a grave cost, the sacrifice of numerous human lives as well as massive damage to the Citadel itself. With their service never forgotten, humanity is judged worthy to receive the illustrious seat on the Council with the military veteran David Anderson stepping up to the task. Unfortunately, the individual to which the galaxy owes their lives has been mysteriously killed in action by an unknown enemy. This has left a drastic gap within the Alliance and, they well know, that no one man could ever replace him.
However he would not be without a legacy, the success of Commander Shepard and his cross species team has given rise to a new program created by the Alliance. The Commissioned Official Special Armed Incident Response otherwise know as the Corsair, mixes together contracted experts and veterans of their own organization in order to best achieve any task set in front of them. Hiring independent starship captains and specialists from outside of their organization, they form units of individuals with unique talents under the Alliance's direct oversight. Not only is this an exclusive organization, but it is also groundbreaking as it contains nearly every race within the universe. Setting aside the differences between themselves, this group has become a coalition force to honor the spirit of John Shepard's heroic crew.
With the Corsair vessel and personnel having no identifiable markings, this allows them to conduct autonomous missions outside of the Alliance jurisdiction and giving them the ability to disavow any knowledge of them if caught. While they are still subjected to some bureaucracy, these individuals are often granted considerable liberty and autonomy in order to facilitate efficient operation. Furthermore they are paid a sizable amount. While the Alliance states the reason for this organization is merely to systematically hunt down the remaining pockets of Geth resistance, in reality the Corsair were created to combat a threat looming over the horizon.
The year is 2185, independent colonies on the fringes of space and outside of the Alliance's control have began rapidly disappearing, without a trace, becoming ghost towns. While the public is told these are the abductions of the Terminus System slaver rings, in reality the prime suspect is the pro-humanity organization Cerberus. However the threat could possibly be even greater. You are a Corsair tasked with investigating these incidents and bring the culprits to justice by any means necessary. The events that follow, the story of a small band of the most unusual heroes who's actions went completely unnoticed by the galaxy, would change the course of history. This was the beginning of the Illusive War.
