A good deal of us have heard about how badly some of the Mass Effect books are, but not until now have I understood to what extent. I've yet to read them, but it was just brought to my attention that the book titled Deception has undergone great scrutiny by fans. To the point where a massive list has been compiled here and it has really made my jaw drop in disbelief this novel was ever published. The book contradicts such a disturbingly large amount of the canon in every possible area from previously established character history and personality, the timeline, technology, and events from the game. For example Salarians have glowing eyes, Volvus walking around with only half of their face covered, Batarians having an embassy on the Citadel, Kai Leng who is violently racist against Asari is seen flirting with a stripper, a pronounced gay character is suddenly presented as entirely heterosexual. The main character's autism is completely ignored and her past is referred to as her being an "unstable twelve-year-old" with the only other indicator being a passing mention to her having a temper, presenting autism as some sort of adolescent phase she has gotten over. That's just the tip of the iceberg, there are far worse offenses in there, yet the novel remains canon.
Well it caused a massive outcry by fans and they won, Bioware has said they will be fixing the novel. We don't really know what that means exactly, but it's a victory for anyone who enjoys Mass Effect or hates when novelist glance at wiki before writing an in-depth sci-fi novel.
In the meantime for those of you who haven't read the book like myself, here is a comedic comic summary.
